The most famous example in Oklahoma is the Skirvin Hotel, where Brownfields funds were used to remove asbestos, as one part of the renovation package.
Before you accept any potentially polluted property, you can request a Phase One environmental study. No cost Phase One studies can be acquired through the Brownfields assessments program. You'll need the permission of the property holder and to work with the EPA and DEQ. These are available throughout the year. Don't be confused by the separate assessment grant program, where applications are only accepted once a year.
If you have property which requires environmental cleanup, is planned for redevelopment, and you can meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for clean up funds, possibly up to $250,000. In 2009, I was told that the success rate for these applications was one in three, not bad odds. Applications are accepted once per year.
The FY11 Proposal Guidelines for Brownfields ARC grants are expected to be released in August. Grant Writing Workshops are being organized. Please check the following web site (EPA Region 6 Website) for information on dates and locations of the workshops now scheduled. This list will be updated as more workshop locations and dates are finalized.
No workshops are listed for Oklahoma yet.
Once the guidelines are released in August, there will be a 60 day period for submitting an application. You can see the draft applications here: http://www.epa.gov/brownfields/applicat.htm
